And I am not really going to preach a sermon to you, that is something with a formal introduction, formal conclusion and a whole lot of points in the middle. What I really want to do is just have a little bit of a Bible study as we sort of approach this passage. Now we did this also last time, but there are so many preliminary considerations to really understanding the text here that we're taking a little time, particularly to look at the Old Testament in regard to what wisdom really is. After all, James refers to wisdom here and doesn't really define it. He assumes that the reader knows a little about wisdom and knows the definition of the wisdom that he's referring to. And since we can't assume that of all of us, because we don't have that Jewish background, we needed to fill in a little bit of the background.\r\n\r\n",

While you're preparing for the study of God's Word together, let me just remind you that it is a common occurrence in life, certainly is in my life and I'm in little doubt that it is in your life as well as a Christian, to meet people who thought they were Christians. I think that's pretty routine. People, who felt they were saved, believed they knew God, and then some severe difficulty came into their life, exposed the reality that they didn't know God at all when they proved to be unable to deal with that severe trial. Their faith was revealed. It was found to be dead faith, not living faith, non-saving faith. They were unable to hold on to the resources provided in those who really believe in God and they forsook what appeared to be perhaps a genuine faith.",

I went to the dentist to have my every-five-year checkup. And he was fooling around in my mouth, doing whatever dentists do with all those things they poke at. And when he was finished, he said, \"You have a problem.\" He said, \"You have a rather large tumor on your tongue,\" which is not something that a preacher wants to hear. He said, \"I don't know whether it's benign or malignant, but you need to go to a surgeon and have it removed.\" I asked him how large it was, he said, \"It's larger than your thumb and it's located somewhere in the back where you can't see it.\"",

It is one that has been, frankly, a battleground for interpreters through the centuries and still there are many people left in confusion as to its meaning. It is the passage that the Roman Catholic Church uses to support what they call the doctrine or the sacrament of Extreme Unction. It is a passage that many would-be healers and advocates of modern-day healing use to propound the idea that we have a guaranteed healing if we pray under the proper circumstances. It is a passage that is used for putting oil on sick people. It's a curious passage and it has created even more curious results.\r\n\r\n",
